First try of Sukiyaki

First try of Sukiyaki

Sukiyaki is a famous Japanese dish served in a shallow iron hot pot with premium wagyu beef in sweet flavour but I had never tried it before. Therefore, this year I decided to give it a try and it was really delicious.

The waitress who dressed in elegant kimono first polished the hot pot with a slice of wagyu beef fat and then poured warishita which is a mixture of sake, soy sauce, sugar and mirin in it.

A slice of wagyu beef with beautiful and intense marbling was heated in the pot and immediately it smelt so good. I was told to beat the raw egg as the dipping sauce for the beef. It tasted so tender that it melted in my mouth without being too greasy and too sweet.

Then, leafy vegetables such as shungiku, naganegi (Japanese leek), tofu, and mushroom such as shiitake and enokitake were simmered in the pot. Whenever the pot turned dry, warishita and seaweed broth were added to adjust the taste. I intermittently ate beef and vegetables to balance the taste.

Glass noodles, udon and rice cakes were added at the end to soak up the broth. The dinner set also came with rice, pickle and appetizer and it was perfectly end with matcha ice cream.

Originally I thought the portion was small and each person got only three slices of beef but after eating the whole meal, I was very full and satisfied. The high quality food and professional service made it a very enjoyable dining experience.
